Are Your Goals Even Yours?

Since spending time with some of the UKs very best Transformation Coaches in London, I have come to understand a lot more about the psychology of behaviour change.

Psychology has always been something that I have found particularly interesting, and I have continued to study the topic in many different ways. NeuroPlasticity being one of them!

And this was when I came up with the concept that people’s “goals” may not even be based on who they are and what they want.

Stay with me here, it’s going to take some explaining!

I recently read a book by the late Alan Watts, which discussed how “genuine” or “natural” we are. In his lectures he suggested that the moment that we are born and for just a short time after, we are at our most genuine.

This could be the only moment in our lifetime that we are free from opinion, influence or perception.

From that moment on, every person and everything that we encounter, bears an influence on us that, over time, forms the person that you are today.

From what foods you like and eat, what to shows you watch or sports teams you support.

But these influences are not necessarily a true reflection of who we are, we just slot in where we fit.

Over the past few months I have been coaching some amazing ladies through their transformations and at the first coaching call I asked them all the same question “Who Are You?”

The answers didn’t really have any passion, conviction or believable feeling attached. In fact, most initially answered with their name… that’s not what I wanted to know, otherwise I would have asked “what is your name?”

So we went through a series of exercises to establish some good old fashioned truths,  and we dug deeper into their thoughts, wishes and inspirations.

Once we had completed all of these exercises, I went back and asked them the same question, “Who Are You?”, and the answers were totally different. I then went on to ask them what they wanted to achieve in their transformations and their goals had totally changed from what they had said originally as well.

This wasn’t a one off experience, it’s happened numerous times with clients all over the UK and in other countries as well.

What I now believe is that their original goal was not in fact their own, but a combination of what they thought they should be, mixed up with what they thought others wanted, or expected them to be.

And this would explain why so many people fail to achieve their final desired goal, because it simply doesn’t hold any importance to them!

So, I challenge you to to think about this, and think about whether your goals are your own, or a manifestation of all of the influences that you have experienced throughout your life time!

Beans, Beans… The More you Eat the more you………. ;)

If you’re trying to lose weight, consider beans your new best friend.

But I am not talking about Baked Beans here… Well not the tinned variety anyway!

Beans once received a mixed bag of reviews within the weight loss community, one group would say, they’re high in carbohydrates, which discouraged many dieters. Whilst the other group would say, beans are complex carbohydrates, non-processed and natural, which means that they may be extremely effective for weight loss, especially when using them as a substitute for processed grains. ARRGGHHH… Who do you listen too???

Several studies have completed and touted the health benefits of beans. A 2013 study done by Loma Linda University found that “a high-fibre bean-rich diet was as effective as a low-carbohydrate diet for weight loss,” while another study revealed that “bean eaters weighed, on average, seven pounds less and had slimmer waists than their bean-avoiding counterparts.

Not only is eating beans for weight loss highly effective, but these fibre-filled, nutrient-rich legumes are friendly on the wallet too!!! 😀

There are a wide variety of different bean recipes for weight loss that can help you shed those pounds.

Here are a couple that you can try out at home:

  • Black Bean Rice

This simple recipe is actually considered a staple in many Latin American countries, a straight-forward meal of black beans and rice that will fill you up and help you burn off  pounds.

Lose up to 10lbs in Two Weeks

Have you got a holiday coming up or a big date? Last-minute dieting can seem daunting, and in some instances, bad news!

But it’s not all doom & gloom. You can look like you have shed up to 10 pounds by losing excess water weight, reducing the bloating and toning up your muscles. Let’s discuss how:

1. Drink More Water

Not only will you consume a load less calories by swapping out your calorie loaded drinks like juice, pop & sweetened coffee or tea for water, but you’ll also reduce and even avoid altogether the bloating that occurs when you consume sugar and bubbles. If, like many people you don’t like just plain, old boring water, why not try adding your own flavours. Lemon, honey, cinnamon are all natural alternatives to sugar, and add a great taste to H2O. Plus when you mix these ingredients with a little warm water it helps promote weight loss and aids a healthier digestion. And hey, did you know that lemon is also an appetite suppressant?

2. Don’t Avoid Fat

Fat has been the bad boy of nutrition and diets for a REALLY LONG TIME, in fact too long! For years us personal trainers, body builders & physique models & competitors have been praising fat for its fat burning capabilities. Now the media has finally cottoned on! Fat is no longer seen as the nutritional demon it was once thought to be! Fat doesn’t affect insulin (the regulation of blood glucose levels and energy production), the same way that carbohydrates, also known as sugars, do. A lower-carb diet that includes fat means that the body will use body fat as energy. It’s all about eating smart, and thinking about the carbs that you do eat (clean veggies), plus maintaining a balanced diet (lean proteins and healthy fats).

3. Watch The Salt

Salt makes us retain water, thats a fact. So an easy way to help reduce your excess water levels is by reducing the salt in your diet. When you have a higher levels of sodium in the body, excess fluid is produced. From a health perspective, this puts a strain on your heart, and physically speaking, that bloated stomach is often caused by water retention. High calorie foods tend to be loaded with salt. Crisps, snacks and even some sweet snacks too!  So by choosing foods low in salt, you’ll be consuming less calories, too.

4. Go For Foods High In Fibre

Fibre is a tummy pleaser, both from the inside & out. Because it’s not digestible, fibre moves quickly through your body. It helps to keep you regular, and tones the tummy in the process. Science shows that fibre can also help to reduce visceral fat, the fat cells deep in the belly. Load up your plate with veggies, fruit and beans!

5. Skip The Crash Diet

Drop out of the unsustainable and unrealistic crash diets! Although you may get an initial result, it won’t last!  In order to drop pounds successfully, you need to be following a healthy diet that offers healthy fats, lean proteins, complex carbs, and is also low in salt and high in fibre.

6. Learn To Love Exercise

Yup, believe it or not, exercise can actually be fun, and when you have a deadline for weight loss, you will want to love doing it every day. Aim to do 30 minutes a day, in a class, down the local park or just in your living room with the curtains drawn and the music up… dance yourself slim to your favourite tunes … you know the saying “dance like no one is watching! You could also try a short interval session… in which case the good news is that you only have to go for 30 seconds for each exercise (jumping jacks, burpees, high knees, jump squats, lateral jumps and walkouts). But, a very big but, you’ll have to go at it at a very high intensity level. Give yourself one minute of active recovery (like walking) between each exercise.

7. Boost Your Metabolism

Just because you’re working out every day, doesn’t mean you should forget your muscles! On alternative days complete a strength workout to increase your muscle mass, which will boost your metabolism naturally! And hey, weights doesn’t mean you need to go out & buy the latest home multi-gym. Try doing callisthenics (body weight training), squats lunges, press ups etc. There are thousands of variations of exercises to get you pumped and burning fat at home!
